How did thirty years pass since this memorable day? Grama, do you remember? Aunt Beth? Aunt Cindy? Aunt Chelle?
On February 6, 1978, we got almost three feet of snow in one day in Ashaway. Providence got 54 inches! The snow came down so fast that road crews couldn't keep up and a state of emergency was declared. People were stranded everywhere because they couldn't get home. This photo was taken on I95--see how the cars are buried??
We lived on Crandall Lane in Ashaway. I don't remember too much about the storm except that the radio actually used the emergency broadcast system. The National Guard was used to help clear roads and keep people safe following the storm. And, when we walked to Kenyon's store for supplies, we walked on sidewalks that towered above the road--even above the mailboxes.
For us "flatlander" kids who thought a few inches was a big storm, this "storm of the century" was one to remember.

I remember going to Nana and Gramps' with you and being afraid that I would get lost in the snow. You held my hnad really tight becuase you said the drifts were over my head and you were afriad too.
I also recall watching "Fantasy Island" and seeing a snow plow come through the driveway. Some how I think this was a treat for me. After all, I was 8, and Fantasy Island isn't really little kid stuff. :)
Even i remember that storm. In part because i have a few pictures somewhere, one of Michelle walking with a cat on her shoulder.
i REMEMBER HAVING TO GO LOOK FOR 2 "LOST " SOULS AND IT SCARED ME HALF TO DEATH THAT I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO FIND THEM AND THAT THEY WOULD FREEZE TO DEATH "OUT THERE". LUCKILY THEY WERE FOUND AND AFTER THAWING OUT SEEMED NONE THE WORST FOR THEIR ADVENTURE. THEIR MOTHER ON THE OTHER HAND STILL SUFFERS FROM RESIDUAL SHIVERS!!!
